Illegal Drugs: Classes, Types and Frequently Asked Questions
Illegal Drugs & The Controlled Substances Act
In 1970, the United States Government enacted the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) as a means of discouraging the purchase, use and trafficking of dangerous and addictive drugs. The purpose of the CSA is not to ban the use of every drug completely-in fact, many of the drugs listed in the CSA have recognized and necessary medical use-but to provide the government with a means of classifying drugs and punishing offenses by means of the drug’s potential for abuse. Since its enactment, the CSA has been used as a source of each state’s laws regarding drug crimes, their level of severity and their consequent penalties.
Every controlled substance listed in the CSA is divided into five schedules, with Schedule V being the least seriously abused substances and Schedule I being the most seriously abused. Below is a shortened list of the most common drugs found under each schedule:
- Schedule V: Cough suppressants containing codeine, pregabalin, and pyrovalerone
- Schedule IV: Xanax, Valium, Provigil, and difenoxin
- Schedule III: Vicodin, anabolic steroids, ketamine, hydrocodone and codeine
- Schedule II: Cocaine, opium, morphine, Oxycodone, PCP, and methylphenidate (Ritalin)
- Schedule I: Marijuana, heroin, LSD, BZP, peyote, mescaline
